Have attached my Epson Perfection V500 scanner to my iMac, but since installing Sierra, the Epson software doesn't download through Updates. If I try to add the scanner manually in Printers & Scanners, it shows up just as 'V500.' If I open Image Capture, it shows under devices as 'V500' until the scanner is initialized, and then it correctly shows as 'Epson Perfection V500.'
The scanner is officially supported, according to the support page on Apple.com.

If I look at /Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist, it was empty initially. Once I plugged in the scanner, it showed:

Download Epson DocumentScan PC for free at BrowserCam. Seiko Epson Corporation published the Epson DocumentScan App for Android operating system mobile devices, but it is possible to download and install Epson DocumentScan for PC or Computer with operating systems such as Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and Mac. VueScan is the easiest way to get your scanner working on macOS Catalina, Windows 10 and more. VueScan includes a driver for your scanner even though it isn't support anymore. Drivers for Mac OS X 10.6 or later will also usually work on Mac OS X 10.12 (Sierra). Epson sold this scanner in some countries as the GT-F720. Flatbed Scanning.
<string>MANUFACTURER:EPSON;MODEL:EPSON Scanner</string>
So for some reason, it's not registering as an 'Epson Perfection V500,' which is what it was under El Capitan, and therefore isn't finding the scanner software to install.
